The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the World Health Organization (WHO) today, during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. This significant agreement was signed by the Secretary-General of the OIC, H.E. Hissein Brahim Taha, and the Director-General of WHO, H.E. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The updated Memorandum of Understanding marks a significant step in the collaboration between the two organizations, building on the original agreement signed in 1982. It reflects the evolving landscape of global health challenges and emphasizes the commitment of both organizations to work more effectively together. Among other critical health issues, the updated MoU outlines key areas of cooperation, including strengthening health systems with a focus on primary healthcare, advancing vaccine development and technology, cancer control initiatives, and nuclear medicine.
In his speech during the signing ceremony, Secretary-General Taha emphasized the shared vision of the two organizations for a healthier future. He stated: “Today, we reaffirm our commitment to uniting our resources, expertise, and innovations to address the pressing health challenges faced by our member states. This Memorandum of Understanding is not just a document; it is a partnership aimed at improving the health and well-being of millions around the globe.”
The signing ceremony was attended by the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), who were participating in the OIC’s Annual Coordination Meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Their presence underscores the collective commitment of the member states to prioritize health as a fundamental pillar of sustainable development.
This collaboration is expected to enhance the member states' capacity to respond to health crises, improve healthcare delivery systems, and strengthen resilience against emerging health threats. By leveraging the strengths of both organizations, they aim to develop effective solutions that address the unique health needs of their populations.
